Introduction to Mosaics
Level: beginner
Fee: $220

Step into the wonderful world of mosaics with TMS's Intro to Mosaics 2-day intensive. You will learn all of the basics to get you on your way to mastering the mosaic technique. Design, composition, materials, substrates & adhesives, cutting & laying, and grouting will all be covered. Supplies such as glass tile, adhesive, and grout as well as use of tools such as clippers and grinders will be provided. At the end of the course you will have created an art piece of which you are sure to be proud. No prior mosaic or art experience is necessary. We welcome you to explore all of the fun, fantastic, and creative possibilities that mosaic afford!

Over-the-Range or Sink Backsplash Level: all levels
Fee: $325

In this 6 session workshop, you will create an over–the-range or sink backsplash which can be framed and hung, screwed to the wall, or done on mesh for installation.  We will provide either a Hardibacker substrate or fiberglass mesh on which to work (up to 20” x 24”), tools (or you can bring your own, if you prefer), adhesive, and grout.  You will provide the design and your own materials, i.e. tile, shells, stones, found objects, etc.  If you prefer, you can purchase tiles from TMS at an additional fee of $60 for a backsplash up to 20” x 24”. Prior consultation with the instructor is required before hand to discuss design, materials, dimensions, and installation preference.   Larger substrates will incur an additional fee depending on the size. 

Sew What?: Mosaic Quilting
Level: all levels
Fee: $245

No needle and thread required in this fun and creative class where quilts only look comfortable! In this 5-day course you will learn to create a 3D substrate with wire mesh, Rigid Wrap, and thinset to mock the surves, folds, and drapes of a blanket, install hanging hardware directly into your substrate, and (the fun part) bring it all to life by creating mosaic quilt patterns with a variety of materials. You are certain to bring home a piece that everyone will love!  Substrate materials will be provided as well as some glass, porcelain, and miscellaneous supplies.  Students should bring beads, rocks, millefiori, and other desired materials for their project.  Class will take a field trip to the Rock Barrell to gather more interesting materials for your piece.

Lazy Susan
Level: beginner/intermediate
Fee: $75

In this workshop, you will create a Lazy Susan that will be the perfect centerpiece for your dining table.  We’ll provide the materials, substrate, adhesive, grout, and expertise.   TMS tools are available for your use during the workshop.

Decorative Mosaic Mirror
Level: beginner/intermediate
Fee: $115

In this 2 session workshop, you will create a decorative mirror frame using glass tesserae.  The framed mirror substrate will be provided along with a variety of glass tile and stained glass, adhesive, grout, and use of tools.  If you have personal items, such as beads, millefiore, found objects, etc., that you would like to include in your mosaic, feel free to bring them with you.

Mosaic Portraiture
Level: intermediate/advanced
Fee: $635/$35

During the 5-day workshop, students will learn to identify facial structure, to see values, recognize colors and blend them to create a realistic portrait. They will create a mosaic portrait using stained glass and vitreous tile.

Students will study mosaic portraits from ancient to contemporary which use numerous techniques and andamenti. References photos will be provided by the instructor to ensure that the student has a positive learning experience and will learn how to choose a good photo from which to work.

Students will receive a lot of one-on-one time with the instructor and frequent critiques with the group will help students learn from one another, as well.

Working Realistically in Mosaics
Level: intermediate/advanced
Fee: $635/$35

During the 5-day workshop, students will learn the process for creating a realistic mosaic interpretation using vitreous glass tile and stained glass. Students will identify shapes and learn to see values, recognize colors, and blend them to create realistic renderings. Students will study mosaics from ancient to contemporary, which use numerous techniques and andamenti.

Youth Art Camp
Level: all levels, ages 8-12
Fee: $200

Let your student's imagination run wild in our 5-day youth art camp. Your child will work on fun art projects of which you will be proud! Each session is different and your student will learn their projects from top to bottom. Every child will have works of art to bring home at the end of the camp and each student will be able to display their favorite piece in our TMS gallery!

Decorative Garden Accessories
Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Fee: $60
Ready to dress up your garden for the spring and summer seasons?  Create garden ornaments on stakes to decorate a pot or flowerbed.  Each student will make 2 mosaic accessories.  Substrates, stakes, adhesives, materials, and grout will be supplied.  Students will have use of tools.

Designing & Planning for Large-Scale Mosaics
Level: all levels
Fee: $250

This workshop will walk you through the steps of designing to scale for a large 2-D mosaic - enlarging your pattern, choosing materials and figuring the quantities needed for the project.

We will discuss:

needs to be considered before starting, i.e. will the mosaic be installed, mounted, or hung
what is the best substrate for your application
should you use mesh or mosaic tape
will you frame.
choose your hanging hardware,
figure thinset/grout needs
decide when you need a waterproof membrane.

We will take a short trip to a nearby CopyMax to learn how to enlarge our patterns. This workshop will include a lecture, hands-on exercises, and question and answer time. Students should come to the workshop with a line drawing and color layout of a project that will be enlarged to a maximum size of 5’ x 9’ for workshop purposes. Students can bring ideas for a specific project they intend to make and instructor will discuss as time permits.
